Sophia Anna Bush (born July 8, 1982)[1] is an American actress. She starred as Brooke Davis in The WB/CW drama series One Tree Hill (2003–2012), and as Erin Lindsay in the NBC police procedural drama series Chicago P.D. (2014–2017). She was a producer for and starred in the lead role of Dr. Samantha "Sam" Griffith in the medical drama Good Sam (2022).

Bush has also appeared in films, including John Tucker Must Die (2006), The Hitcher (2007), The Narrows (2008), Chalet Girl (2011), Marshall (2017), Acts of Violence (2018), and Incredibles 2 (2018). She is also known for her philanthropy work and social activism, including her work for the Time's Up movement and DoSomething.org. Bush is currently a co-host on the Drama Queens podcast along with her former One Tree Hill co-stars, Hilarie Burton Morgan and Bethany Joy Lenz.

Early life and education[edit]

Bush was born in Pasadena, California,[2] the only child of Maureen Searson and Charles William Bush.[1] Her mother runs a photography studio,[3] and her father is an advertising and beauty photographer.[4] In 2000, she graduated from Westridge School for Girls, where she was a member of the volleyball team. At Westridge, she was required to participate in the theater arts program. Bush stated: "Part of my school's requirement was to do a play. I was really irritated because I wanted to play volleyball and I had to go and do this play. But there was a moment after the performance when I realized I had gone and been somebody else. I thought, 'If I could do this for the rest of my life, I am set.' It was like love at first sight."[5] At age 17, Bush was named the Tournament of Roses Parade Queen.[1][6]

Career[edit]

Bush at the Toronto International Film Festival, September 5, 2008

Bush made her first film appearance in the 2002 film National Lampoon's Van Wilder opposite Ryan Reynolds. Following this, she made appearances in several television shows, including Nip/Tuck, Sabrina the Teenage Witch, and the HBO film Point of Origin. In 2002, Bush was cast as Kate Brewster in Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines, though she was replaced by Claire Danes after a week of filming.[7] Jonathan Mostow, the director of the film, stated that he had replaced her as he felt she was too young for the role, but praised her talent as an actress.[8]

In 2003, Bush was cast as Brooke Davis in the WB television series One Tree Hill. After Bush gained mainstream fame, she became a spokesperson for high-profile brands and posed on the cover of several mainstream magazines, including Entertainment Weekly, Lucky, Maxim, Glamour, InStyle, and Zooey Magazine. She has also had several endorsement deals, including for Ocean Pacific clothing.[9] Bush and her One Tree Hill co-stars were endorsers for MasterCard, Kmart, Chevy Cobalt and Cingular Wireless.[10][11][12] She directed three episodes of the series, including the penultimate episode of the ninth and final season.[13]

In July 2006, Bush co-starred in the 20th Century Fox comedy film John Tucker Must Die, directed by Betty Thomas, opposite Brittany Snow and Jesse Metcalfe. The film was a commercial success, grossing over $60 million worldwide. That same year, she also starred in Buena Vista Pictures' supernatural thriller Stay Alive alongside Jon Foster, Frankie Muniz, and Adam Goldberg. The film, the first to be released by Hollywood Pictures in five years, opened at number three in the U.S. box office.[14] She played Grace Andrews in the 2007 remake of the classic horror film The Hitcher, starring opposite Sean Bean. In 2008, Bush co-starred alongside Kevin Zegers and Vincent D'Onofrio in François Velle's independent film The Narrows, playing Kathy Popovich. Based on Tim McLoughlin's novel Heart of the Old Country, the film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2008.[15] Three years later, she co-starred in the British romantic comedy film Chalet Girl, which was released in February 2011.

Bush at the Hollywood Style Awards, October 10, 2009

In February 2012, it was reported that Bush had joined the cast of the upcoming CBS sitcom Partners.[16] Premiering on September 24, 2012, the series ran for a single season until November, when it was announced that the series had been canceled after six episodes.[17] The remaining seven episodes of the series' initial thirteen-episode order remain unaired in the United States, though they were later aired by various international outlets. In 2013, Bush starred in Passion Pit's "Carried Away" music video, which debuted on February 14.[18] That same year, she was cast in a main role in the television pilot Hatfields & McCoys, but the project failed to be picked up to series.[19]

In August 2013, Bush joined the cast of Chicago P.D. as Det. Erin Lindsay.[20] The series premiered on January 8, 2014.[21] She left the series after four seasons.[22] In December 2018, she cited "abusive behavior" as the reason for leaving the show.[23] Bush also frequently appeared on the first and third Chicago franchise series, Chicago Fire and Chicago Med respectively. In 2018, Bush provided the voice of Voyd, an aspiring superhero, in Pixar's film, Incredibles 2, the sequel to 2004's The Incredibles.[24] In 2019, Bush started her own podcast titled "Work In Progress".[25]

In 2020, Bush appeared as Veronica in four episodes of the first season of Love, Victor on Hulu.[26] Since 2021, Bush has been a co-host on the Drama Queens podcast along with her former One Tree Hill co-stars, Hilarie Burton Morgan and Bethany Joy Lenz.[27] In April 2023, it was announced that Bush would make her West End debut in 2:22 A Ghost Story at the Apollo Theatre.[28][29] Citing a medical issue, Bush announced that she would no longer be a part of the production in July 2023.[30]

In 2023, Bush appeared on Celebrity Family Feud, competing against Gayle King and her team.[31]

Personal life[edit]

Bush became engaged to her One Tree Hill co-star Chad Michael Murray in May 2004,[32] and they married on April 16, 2005, in Santa Monica, California.[33] After five months of marriage, the pair announced their separation in September 2005.[34] In February 2006, Bush filed papers for an annullment, citing fraud.[35] Bush's petition was denied,[36] and she and Murray were instead granted a divorce in December 2006.[37] On her divorce, Bush later said: "It devastates me now that I have been reduced to a Hollywood statistic – another joke marriage. I never expected to be married more than once...because I knew what I was getting into and will always believe in love."[38] In a January 2014 episode of Watch What Happens: Live, she stated: "We were two stupid kids who had no business being in a relationship in the first place. To all the other co-stars who've worked it out, more power to you."[39][40]

From 2006 to 2007, Bush dated her Stay Alive co-star Jon Foster. They remained friends after the split, and Bush said that the breakup taught her a valuable lesson about the difference of love and being in love.[41]

From 2008 to 2009, Bush dated her One Tree Hill co-star James Lafferty.[42] She also dated actor Austin Nichols,[1] confirming in May 2010 that they had been dating on and off for four years.[43] Nichols took the role of Julian Baker on One Tree Hill to be with Bush,[43] who ended their relationship in 2012.[42]

From 2013 to 2014, Bush dated Dan Fredinburg, a program manager for Google. Bush cited the strains of their long-distance relationship as the cause of separation.[39][44][45] Bush remained friends with Fredinburg afterward, and noted that his accidental death in 2015 significantly impacted her.[46]

From 2014 to 2016, Bush dated her Chicago P.D. co-star, actor Jesse Lee Soffer.[47]

In 2020, she began dating businessman Grant Hughes and announced their engagement in August 2021 via Instagram.[48] The couple were married on June 11, 2022, at the Philbrook Museum of Art in Tulsa, Oklahoma.[49] On August 4, 2023, Bush filed for divorce after 13 months of marriage.[50][51]

In April 2024, Bush confirmed her relationship with former professional soccer player Ashlyn Harris and came out as queer in an article in Glamour that she wrote.[52]

Bush's second cousin, nine-year-old Christina Green, was among those killed in the Tucson shooting rampage in 2011 that left then Rep. Gabby Giffords critically wounded. Bush later revealed they had never met but were planning on it, as Bush had attended Green's parents' wedding.[53]

Activism[edit]

Bush prepares to speak on the Center Stage at Collision 2017 in New Orleans, Louisiana.

She is a part of fundraisers such as Fuck Cancer, Run for the Gulf, and Global Green Gulf Relief[54] and has been involved in political issues, including her support for Barack Obama's candidacy for president in the 2008 election. In February 2008, she made several appearances in Texas in support of the Obama campaign in the Democratic presidential primary election. Bush was joined in Dallas, Fort Worth, and Waco by fellow actor Adam Rodríguez. Touring mostly college campuses, they urged young voters to get involved politically.[55]

In April 2009, along with stars Sarah Chalke, Jason Lewis, Alicia Silverstone, Jane Lynch, and Lance Bass, Bush appeared in the Funny or Die video "A Gaythering Storm", which parodied a National Organization for Marriage video objecting to same-sex marriage.[56] Bush is a staunch supporter of gay rights and, in May 2009, she showed up at a rally in protest of Proposition 8. She carried a sign stating, "I DO support the freedom to marry", and a shirt which had the words "Legalize Gay" across it. In an interview in January 2012, Bush said about the 2012 Republican candidates: "I will not vote for a candidate who thinks you can 'pray away the gay,' I will not vote for a candidate who thinks that he has more rights to my uterus than I do, I will not vote for a candidate who thinks that it's okay to dump toxic waste in the ocean. I'm afraid for our country that people like this could even be thought of as the president. I live in a country where I believe all men are created equal, not just wealthy white guys. I believe all men, all women, regardless of race, gender, socioeconomic background, you deserve the same rights."[57] In June 2016, the Human Rights Campaign released a video in tribute to the victims of the Orlando nightclub shooting; in the video, Bush and others told the stories of the people killed there.[58][59]

Bush set up a fundraiser intended to help people living in the area of the Gulf of Mexico affected by the environmental disaster of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill on April 20, 2010. The actress has visited Louisiana and testified in interviews of the horror she felt when she visited those places.[60] The fundraiser is on the Internet through crowdsourcing website Crowdrise.com. The actress, to support the fundraiser, announced that she would be running a half marathon that following November, despite having asthma and a year-old knee injury.[61] Bush has additionally teamed up with Do Something to raise more environmental awareness among teens. She was chosen as the spokesperson to endorse the launch of eMission, a Facebook game with the social mission to engage America's youth in fighting climate change created through the joint efforts of Do Something and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) Energy Star program.[62]

In 2011, Bush won the Do Something Twitter Award for having spread the word via her Twitter account on how her followers could help with the cleanup after the Deepwater Horizon oil spill.[63][64] She was voted "Fan Favorite" by Facebook users on DoSomething.org.[65] In 2011, Bush also became involved in the Pencils of Promise organization, which builds schools and increases educational opportunities in the developing world.[66] In December 2011, Bush competed with other stars in the Mozilla Firefox Challenge, a one-month fundraising contest whose winner is granted $25,000 to put toward a favorite cause; she won the contest in January 2012.[13][67] In April 2013, Bush took part in Global Poverty Project's "Live Below the Line" campaign, which consists in living on $1.50 a day to raise awareness of extreme poverty around the world.[68]

In 2013, Bush hosted a Prizeo campaign to raise funds for one of her favorite causes, I Am that Girl.[69] As part of the campaign, Bush offered donors a grand prize of the opportunity to skydive with her.[70] In 2014, Bush's foreword to Alexis Jones' debut novel I Am that Girl was released and distributed by accessories retailer Claire's.[71] In 2016, Bush was named to Oprah's SuperSoul 100 list of visionaries and influential leaders.[72]

Bush is a founding member of the movement Time's Up. Two of her contributions include creating a clothing line benefiting Planned Parenthood and giving a speech at the Women's March on January 20, 2018.[73] Sophia is also constantly using her social media platforms, such as Twitter, encouraging people to participate in the ongoing activism opportunities around the world.

In the 2018 fight over the nomination of Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court, Bush was supportive of Christine Blasey Ford, and praised her "strength" throughout the controversy. Bush tweeted, "To everyone saying 'why did they wait? The timing feels suspect,' etc. Just remember Bill Cosby. No one wanted to believe it about him. It was true. And he's going to prison. I'd wager more women victimized by Kavanaugh will come forward. Women feel safety in numbers #TimesUp".[74]

In 2020, Bush joined the ownership group for Angel City FC of the National Women's Soccer League.[75]

In July 2022, Bush and Grant Hughes wrote an essay for Glamour affirming their support of abortion rights in the wake of the Supreme Court issuing the decision of Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization that subsequently overturned Roe v. Wade. In the piece, Bush wrote,[76]

This moment is nothing short of a national emergency. But these days it also feels incredibly personal. Because I type this as I look across the kitchen at my husband. A man with whom I am deeply in love. And a man who might never have come into my life, nor me into his, had it not been for an abortion. Not my experience — I have never had an abortion — but his. An abortion that he and a former partner had is what got us here.

Bush is known for promulgating her progressive views on her social media pages. Bush uses Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and her blog to raise awareness of world events and fundraisers in which she takes part, as well as a platform to raise awareness on progressive issues and political events that are occurring.

I Am a Voter[edit]

In 2018, Bush helped found a nonpartisan movement with Mandana Dayani that aims to create a cultural shift around voting and civic engagement by unifying around a central truth: democracy works best when we all participate.[77] I Am a Voter has partnered with Disney, NBA, NFL, McDonald's, Stuart Weitzman, and Bumble. Their campaign to boost voter registration included participants Debra Messing, Eric McCormack, Sean Hayes, Gwyneth Paltrow, Robert Downey Jr., Jennifer Aniston, Lisa Kudrow, Courteney Cox, Bush, Hilarie Burton, and Bethany Joy Lenz. According to I Am a Voter, the effort generated over one billion digital impressions and 250 media articles upon launch.[78]

Public image[edit]

Bush's appearance has often been the subject of media attention. She was ranked #3 on Femme Fatales: The 50 Sexiest Women of 2004 and named #15 on Much Music's 20 Hottest Women of 2004.[79] In April 2007, she ranked No. 90 in the British popular men's magazine FHM, in their countdown of 100 Sexiest Women of 2007.[79] Subsequently, she ranked No. 89 in the U.S. edition of the same magazine. In May 2007, Bush ranked No. 24 in the Maxim Hot 100 List of 2007.[79] She also appeared on the cover of the November 2006 edition of Maxim with her One Tree Hill co-stars Hilarie Burton and Danneel Harris. She ranked #30 on Maxim's "Hot 100" of 2014 list. She was featured in People's "Beautiful at Every Age" and "Most Beautiful" lists for several years.[80]

Bush has been featured in several fashion blogs and magazines, including CosmoGirl, Health, Lucky, Zooey, Saturday Night, Teen People and Bello.[citation needed]

Nicole Evangeline Lilly (born 3 August 1979)[1][2] is a Canadian author and retired actress. She gained popularity for her first leading role as Kate Austen in the ABC drama series Lost (2004–2010), which garnered her six nominations for the Saturn Award for Best Actress on Television and a nomination for the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Drama Series.

Lilly has also appeared in the war film The Hurt Locker (2008) and sports drama Real Steel (2011), and has starred as Tauriel in Peter Jackson's The Hobbit film series, appearing in The Desolation of Smaug (2013) and The Battle of the Five Armies (2014). She has portrayed Hope van Dyne / Wasp in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), beginning with Ant-Man (2015). Lilly is also the author of a children's book series The Squickerwonkers.

Early life[edit]

Lilly was born in Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta, on 3 August 1979. She was raised in British Columbia by her mother, a daycare center owner, and her father, a home economics teacher. She has an older sister and a younger sister. Lilly was raised Baptist and Mennonite.[1][3][4]

Lilly graduated from W. J. Mouat Secondary School in Abbotsford, British Columbia, with a 4.3 GPA; she was captain of the soccer team and vice president of the student council.[5] In university, she was a waitress, did "oil changes and grease jobs on big rig trucks", and was a flight attendant for Royal Airlines to pay for her tuition.[6][7] Her interest in humanitarian causes and world development led her to major in international relations at the University of British Columbia.[8]

Career[edit]

2002–2003: Early career[edit]

Lilly's acting career began when she was discovered by a Ford Modelling Agency agent while passing the time in Kelowna, British Columbia.[9] She took the agent's business card but did not immediately pursue acting. She eventually called and the agency landed her several roles in commercials and non-speaking parts in the TV shows Smallville and Kingdom Hospital.[8][10][11] She was also on a video game news and review show on the gaming television channel G4TV.[12]

2004–2007: Breakthrough with Lost[edit]

Lilly in 2007

In late 2003, Lilly was encouraged by a friend to audition for ABC's Lost, but did not expect to be cast.[13] The secrecy campaign meant auditioning actors could not see the full script, could read only short scenes, and knew only the basic premise of people surviving a plane crash on a tropical island.[13] It reminded Lilly of The Blue Lagoon, and she thought Lost would "at best be a mediocre TV show".[13] Around 75 women auditioned for the part of Kate Austen. Writer and co-creator Damon Lindelof said that he and executive producer and co-creator J. J. Abrams "...were fast-forwarding through a tape and he saw her and said: 'That's the girl!'"[14][15] The character almost had to be recast, as Lilly had trouble acquiring a work visa to enter the United States.[16] Her application was finally accepted after nearly 20 tries; she arrived in Hawaii for filming one day late.[16]

Lost ran for six seasons, from 2004 to 2010.[17] It was one of ABC's top primetime shows, winning one Golden Globe Award and ten Primetime Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Drama Series in 2005, and was ranked the top-rated TV show of the decade by IMDb.[18] Lilly was between 24 and 30 years of age during the show's run, appearing in 108 of 121 episodes, as her character, Kate Austen, was the show's female lead. In 2006 she was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress – Television Series Drama.[19][20] Robert Bianco of USA Today praised Lilly's performance in the episode named "Eggtown", saying it was almost worthy of a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series nomination.[21] After shooting the final episode of Lost, Lilly said she was considering taking a break from acting to focus on her charity and humanitarian efforts.[22] She told Vulture: "I consider acting a day job—it's not my dream; it's not my be-all, end-all."[23] She says she uses her high-profile roles to further her humanitarian efforts, not to achieve stardom.[24]

2008–2014: Established actress[edit]

In 2008, Lilly appeared in the film The Hurt Locker, directed by Kathryn Bigelow.[25] The film received widespread acclaim and went on to be nominated in nine categories at the 82nd Academy Awards, winning six of these including Best Picture.[26] Lilly and the cast won the Gotham Independent Film Award for Best Ensemble Cast and the Washington D.C. Area Film Critics Association Award for Best Ensemble.[27][28] That same year, Lilly had a leading role in the psychological thriller film Afterwards.[29][30][31][32]

In May 2010, Lilly announced on The View that being a mother was her top priority, but that she liked acting as a "day job" and would continue it when possible.[33] She took a short hiatus that year and was not in contact with Hollywood.[34]

In 2011, despite turning down a number of film offers, Lilly appeared as Bailey Tallet, a boxing gym owner, in Real Steel alongside Hugh Jackman.[35] She accepted the role after director Shawn Levy sent her the script.[36] Levy noted that Lilly was "magnificent to look" and that he "needed someone who you believed had grown up in a man's world; Bailey needed to have a strength and a toughness that was not at the expense of her being womanly".[37] Real Steel went on to be nominated for Best Visual Effects at the 84th Academy Awards.[38][39] During promotion for the film, Lilly turned down a role in the X-Men franchise from Jackman, noting that she "wasn't into superhero movies" at the time.[40]

In 2012, Lilly was cast as the Mirkwood elf Tauriel in Peter Jackson's three-part adaptation of J. R. R. Tolkien's The Hobbit.[41][42] The character, which does not appear in the original book by Tolkien, was created by Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh as the head of the Elven guard.[43] For the role, Lilly underwent training for swordplay, archery and speaking the Elvish language.[43][44] Lilly described Tauriel as a nonconformist, noting that she tends to "rebel against the established social order of the Elves".[45] Lilly appeared as the character in The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (2013) and its sequel, The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies (2014).[46]

2015–2023: Ant-Man films and other work[edit]

In 2015, Lilly played Hope van Dyne, the daughter of Hank Pym and Janet van Dyne, in the superhero film Ant-Man as a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).[47] Lilly described her character as "capable, strong, and kick-ass", but said that being raised by two superheroes resulted in Hope being "a pretty screwed up human being [...] and the clear message sent by my name is that I'm not a big fan of my father and so I took my mother's name."[48] Lilly also signed a multi-film contract with Marvel.[49] The film received generally positive reviews.[50]

In 2017, Lilly starred in the Netflix horror film Little Evil alongside Adam Scott.[51] In 2018, she reprised her role as Van Dyne in Ant-Man and the Wasp (2018), donning the superhero mantle of the Wasp which had been teased in the first film during an end credits scene.[52][53] The film received generally positive reviews with Lilly's performance being praised.[54][55] The Wasp became the first superheroine to be a titular character in an MCU film.[56] Lilly also reprised her role in Avengers: Endgame (2019).[57] That same year, Lilly was set to star in a film titled Happy Place alongside Ike Barinholtz.[a][58]

In 2021, she starred with Armie Hammer and Gary Oldman in Crisis, directed by Nicholas Jarecki.[59] That same year, she also starred in South of Heaven alongside Jason Sudeikis and Mike Colter.[60][61] The latter won her Best Actress at the AFIN International Film Festival.[62] Lilly also voiced an alternate version of the Wasp in the Disney+ animated series What If...? (2021).[63] She voiced Van Dyne in the episode "What If... Zombies?!", and received positive reviews.[64]

In February 2023, Lilly reprised her role as Hope van Dyne / Wasp in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, released as the first film of Phase Five of the MCU.[65][66] That same month, it was announced that Lilly would voice a character in the English version of the animated historic epic Israeli film, Legend of Destruction, which was originally released in 2021 in Hebrew.[67] Lilly voiced the "last Jewish queen, Berenice of Cilicia, who did her best to protect her people [...] even at the cost of her life", in which Lilly noted was "really brutal and sad, but it's true".[68]

2024–present: Retirement[edit]

In June 2024, Lilly announced that she was "stepping away" from acting.[69] She noted that "I might return to Hollywood one day, but for now this is where I belong".[69]

In the media[edit]

Public image[edit]

After gaining recognition for her role as Kate Austen in Lost, Lilly began to appear in the media and was regularly included in "Most Beautiful" lists.[70] Entertainment Weekly voted Lilly one of its "Breakout Stars of 2004".[71] That same year, Lilly was voted one of People's "50 Most Beautiful People".[72] In 2007, her portrayal of Austen was voted the number one "Sexiest Woman on Television" by TV Guide and made FHM's Top Sexiest.[73]

Lilly is noted for playing "strong, tragic, and even a bit snarky" characters.[74] Lilly's roles in The Hobbit film series and the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Tauriel and Hope van Dyne / Wasp respectively, have received critical acclaim.[75] [76][77] For her performance as Tauriel, Lilly was nominated for the Saturn Award for Best Supporting Actress,[78] the Broadcast Film Critics Association Award for Best Actress in an Action Movie,[79] the Empire Award for Best Supporting Actress,[80] and a Kid's Choice Award for Favorite Female Buttkicker.[81]

Charity work[edit]

Lilly works with non-profits such as the GO Campaign.[22] In 2009, Lilly auctioned off custom lingerie in support of Task Brasil, "a non-profit organization dedicated to helping the lost street children of Brazil by providing them secure housing".[82] In 2010, she auctioned off three lunches in Vancouver, Honolulu, and Los Angeles to help widows and orphans in Rwanda, a country she has made numerous trips to as part of her charity work.[83] In 2012, Lilly auctioned off a Hawaiian hike to raise money for the Sierra Club.[84]

Other ventures[edit]

The Squickerwonkers[edit]

On set of Lost in 2006, Lilly noted in an interview that she wanted to be a writer.[85] On July 18, 2013, Lilly debuted her book series, titled The Squickerwonkers at the San Diego Comic-Con centred around a young girl who joins a group of characters described as a "family" who are all "strange outcasts" and have "very particular vices".[86][87][88]

In 2014, Titan Books released the first title of The Squickerwonkers titled The Squickerwonkers: The Prequel (2014) with the foreword written by Peter Jackson.[86][89][90] Three main titles titled The Squickerwonkers, Act 1: The Demise of Selma the Spoiled (2018), The Squickerwonkers, Act 2: The Demise of Lorna the Lazy (2018) and The Squickerwonkers, Act 3: The Demise of Andy the Arrogant (2019) were self-published by Quiet Cocoon Productions with Rodrigo Bastos Didier taking over as illustrator.[91][92][93] Lilly has stated that her literary inspirations are Roald Dahl and Edward Gorey.[94][95]

Personal life[edit]

Lilly was raised Baptist and Mennonite and described herself as "very devout and evangelical". She has been involved in humanitarian work for 13 years in Rwanda where she runs a NGO.[96][97]

Lilly was married to hockey player Murray Hone from 2003 to 2004.[98] She was in a relationship with English actor and Lost costar Dominic Monaghan from 2004 to 2007.[99] In 2010, Lilly began a relationship with Norman Kali. She gave birth to a son, in 2011.[100] Their second son was born in October 2015.[101]

On 20 December 2006, an electrical problem set fire to Lilly's house in Kailua, Hawaii, destroying the house and all of her possessions while she was on the set of Lost.[102] Though she lost all of her belongings, she said that the fire was "almost liberating" and that she was "in no hurry to clutter up [her] life again".[103]

On 16 March 2020, Lilly received mixed responses when she refused to self-quarantine during the COVID-19 pandemic, said it was "business as usual" on Instagram, and claimed that she values "freedom over [her] life".[104] On 26 March, she apologized for her comments and called them "dismissive, arrogant, and cryptic".[105] On 27 January 2022, she posted a photo on Instagram showing that she had taken part in a march against COVID-19 vaccine mandates in Washington, D.C. and said that "nobody should ever be forced to inject their body with anything, against their will".[106][107] On 18 February, amidst the Canada convoy protest against federal COVID-19 mandates, she urged Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to meet with the protestors.[108][109]
